In the show, Ed is fired from his job as lawyer in New York, after misplacing a coma in a contract that cost $1.6 million to the company. In top of that, he comes home the same day to discover his wife in bed with the mailman...Ed returns to his home town after that, and buys a bowling alley. Ed has three employees for running it. One of them is Phil, interpreted by Michael Ian Black.Michael Ian Black is an American actor, comedian, writer and director. He was born as Michael Ian Schwartz on August 12, 1971. Besides Ed, Black has starred various TV comedy series like The State, Viva Variety, Stella and Michael & Michael Have Issues. He is also known as a prominent poker player, appearing several times on Celebrity Poker Showdown. He also released a children's book named Chicken Cheeks in 2009.
Black is known for participating on the I Love the... programs on VH1 American cable television network. He is also known for being main subject of the current Sierra Mist commercials, host of the first season on Spy TV NBC's hidden camera show, his Stella comedy troupe and several appearances in the film Big Helium Dog.
He began his career as a member of the comedy group called The State and appeared on the TV show of the same name on MTV. He worked with other members of that group on the show Viva Variety and in the film Wet Hot American Summer. He acted as a guest host on The Late Late Show and auditioned for the permanent hosting role. He was picked as one of the finalists but the job was eventually given to Craig Ferguson. He also has a column in the online edition of McSweeney's, called “Michael Ian Black Is a Very Famous Celebrity”.
Black has also acted as a prison guard in The Ten, film of 2007, and starred the TV series Reaper the same year, interpreting a gay demon. 2007 was a very productive year for this multifaceted artist, who released his first stand up comedy album that year, called I Am a Wonderful Man.
